Bugging out for is not a realistic option for most of us who live near major urban centers. There simply is nowhere to bug out to. We don't have cabins in the woods or sail boats to sail away on to go to South America. The best most of us can do is prepare for bad times by having emergency water and food (including several ways to purify water). If the SHTF we're just going to have to sit tight and wait it out until basic services are restored.
It seems to me that there are a lot of mundanes who think that they can just make for hills and some stranger is going to take them in, or that people can just go "where the food is." I really doubt that small town America is going to be waiting with open arms as the masses come streaming out of the major cities looking for food. In the short term it's going to be a matter of need versus supply, and there will be many more mouths to feed than outright food availible. If the hypothetical breakdown ever happens, the first few months are going to be messy. Think of Katrina magnified by a factor of [add number here] xxx.
